8 Ways to Celebrate National Pet Day

National pet day is a big deal. It is a day where pet owners everywhere can celebrate their pets and the many things pets bring to our lives. National Pet Day is celebrated on April 11 in the United States. However, pet owners all over the world should take this day to give thanks for their pets.

So, how should you celebrate National Pet Day? Here are a few ideas that will have your furry friend’s tail wagging or whiskers relaxed!

What is National Pet Day?

National Pet Day is a relatively new holiday in the U.S. It began in 2006. Colleen Page, an Animal Welfare Advocate, decided to bring attention to the many millions of pets waiting for a home in animal shelters. Since that time, National Pet Day has provided a great avenue for people to celebrate the joy that their pets bring.

Eight Ways to Celebrate National Pet Day

Looking for ways to celebrate National Pet Day in 2020? Here are some great ways to spoil your pet this April 11.

  • Take advantage of the great outdoors!

Many pets love walks. It doesn’t matter whether you are walking a dog or playing frisbee, playing with your cat, or entertaining your rabbit – they all enjoy being outdoors. Dogs especially love being outdoors during the spring. Keep in mind your pet’s general activity level. Low activity pets may need to go on less intensive outdoor adventures. However, all of your pets will enjoy a little time to roam in the great outdoors.

  • Pamper time!

Doing a little extra grooming will be much appreciated by your pet this April 11th. Many pets shed or molt during the spring. While you may enjoy using a professional groomer, sometimes doing it yourself is a good idea as it’s a great bonding activity.

  • Did someone say treats?

Who doesn’t love treats? This April 11, show your pets your love by treating them to an extra special treat. It doesn’t really matter the species of your pet; all animals appreciate variety in their diets. Put yourself in your pet’s place. You wouldn’t want to eat the same thing every day. Neither does your pet. Let them know how much they mean to you by giving them a little something special today. Here are some ideas for spicing up your pet’s diet, whether they’re a dog, cat, rabbit or small pet

  • Donate

Pet rescues and care centers take in homeless pets. Why not show your love by giving back to these organizations. There is nothing wrong with purchasing a pet from a reputable breeder. However, adopting a pet comes with its own rewards.

If you are an adopted pet owner, give back to your local pet rescue by aiding. Extra goods and your time are valuable volunteer items as well. Rescues appreciate everything from old dog toys, pet food to blankets.

  • Take a picture of your pet and post it on Facebook or Instagram! #NationalPetDay

There is a reason that cats and dogs are some of the most searched videos on the internet. Don’t be afraid to post a picture or video of your pet with a lovely comment and hashtag #NationalPetDay. Let the world know how much you love having this animal in your life. Whether old, young or in between, a pet picture/video is a great way to show your appreciation this National Pet Day.

  • Go to a dog park

Dog parks are for dogs specifically. They can be a great way to socialize your pet. Of course, you need to ensure that your dog is properly socialized ahead of time, as otherwise it could end up being more of a headache than a nice activity! If your dog loves interacting with others, a dog park may be their idea of heaven – especially if your pooch lives in a one-dog household.

When you are looking for a new dog park keep a few things in mind. You need to find one that insists upon the correct vaccinations. Every dog your pet comes in contact with should be vaccinated.

Also, your dog needs to have basic recall skills and know their basic commands. “Come”, “Stay”, and “Leave it” are all important commands that your dog should understand and respond to. Do not take a dog that is unresponsive or disobedient to a dog park.

  • Watch a movie

While it may be a little cheesy, shower your pet with love by watching a pet-friendly movie together. Family-friendly movies are a great way to express your love of pets with the whole family. Air Bud, Babe, and Marley and Me are perennial pet lover favorites.

  • Show them some love

Finally, you should love your pets this National Pet Day. All pets, no matter the species, love being loved. Pet, groom, and enjoy your pets this National pets Day. It is the best way to show them that you care.

Conclusion

Everyone loves pets. About 85 million families in the U.S. have pets. That is 67% of the entire American population! This National Pet Day, show your appreciation by following the tips described above. Each one will allow you to get the most out of your pets and show your animals how much you care. Providing grooming, affection, attention, and funding rescue organizations are all important ways that you can show your love of animals.

Don’t let April 11 pass you by without celebrating National Pet Day. We all love our pets. It is time to show the world why!
